Tip #1

You probably know that if you have two or more programs (or folder windows) open at the same time, you can switch from one to the other by clicking the appropriate program button on the taskbar. You can do the same thing using the ALT key. Press and hold the ALT key down, and then press your TAB key (next to the letter "Q") to bring up a small window that lists the programs or windows that are currently open. If you continue holding down the ALT key, when you press TAB again, you will toggle to the next program icon that's listed in the box. When the highlight is on the program you want to use, release both keys and you will switch to that window automatically. Try it!

Tip #2
In our classes we have talked about using the keyboard to access the Start Menu, but did you know that you could also use the keyboard to close programs or windows? You may be wondering why you would want to do this. Believe it or not, there are times when the mouse stops working or gets disconnected from the computer. Knowing the keyboard command can be very helpful! Here's the trick: Press and hold down the ALT key. (There is one at each end of your space bar.) While holding down ALT, go to the very top row of your keyboard and tap the F4 key. When the window closes, release the ALT key. This tip is very helpful if you have opened several folder windows or several programs and would like to close them quickly. If you have no programs open and you are back at the Windows Desktop, you can also shut down Windows by using the ALT + F4 command. Make sure that "Shut down the computer" is selected, then press ENTER to shut down the computer. (Be sure you have saved all your work and closed all programs before you do this!)
